Just when you thought the folks at BMW had maxed out their abilities, they go and do something like this. Over the weekend the German-born brand made their announcement for the all new BMW 530e iPerformance. Although it’s not the first electric hybrid in the BMW family, it brings some revolutionary “firsts” to the lineup.

The BMW 530e iPerformance Preview

The BMW 530e iPerformance marks the fourth installment in the iPerformance line. The engineering offers the feel of a sport sedan with an electric driving option with eDrive plug-in hybrid charging. The 2.0-liter gasoline engine packs a TwinPower Turbo punch. At 180 horsepower and 215 lb-ft of torque, it combines with the electric motor for a full 248 horsepower overall. Conversely, BMW will utilize a lithium ion cell battery with 9.2 kilowatts of battery power.

So far the 530e sounds a bit like just another electric hybrid. Sure, it has some nice power to it, but is that really enough to set the higher standard? Well, the engineers didn’t think so, so they added the sDrive Rear-Wheel Drive as well as the xDrive All-Wheel Drive. As the first iPerformance vehicle to offer both driving options, the 530e is even more capable than the rest. But it doesn’t stop there. The Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro settings bring in a host of options for drivers of every type. The Auto eDrive brings both motor types to interact in tandem for an optimal combination of gasoline and electric. The Battery Control mode allows the driver to manually set voltage levels for the lithium ion battery. Max eDrive operates on battery power alone for the eco-friendly timing.

Intelligence Comes Standard

As expected, BMW’s 530e will be as intelligent as it is stylish. While the official models aren’t finished yet, the technology is promised to be impressive. A gesture control infotainment system ensures a true hands-free experience. Active Cruise Control and Stop and Go offer a smart, and safe, presence on the road. A combination of sensors monitors traffic and surrounding situations for intelligent driving options. Active Lane Departure warnings, a Surround View, and ParkNow brains make finding parking safe, reliable, and efficient. Overall, the engineers didn’t skimp on the brains of their next iPerformance vehicle.

While we don’t have the in-depth specs and features to mull over quite yet, BMW seems to have made a promising addition to the already impressive iPerformance lineup. The 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance hits dealerships in Spring 2017. Pricing is still to come.
